PCR – Piper

This morning I listened to Piper speak on “The Life-Giving Voice of the Son of God” 09/13/09. This is out of the same series as my previous post where Piper is speaking from the Gospel of John. Unfortunately my memory fails me as I try to remember the specific verse he started with, but he touches on six points (I’ll let you listen to determine what they are) and ends with a presentation of how works, fruit, God, and humans all fit together. He ties the “works/evidence of faith” discussion in with verses from John 15 (“I am the vine, you are the branches…”) The six points speak to the characteristics of Jesus that make Him the awe-inspiring Savior that He is.

I hope to get a little more detailed in my reviews, but this should be a good overview for anyone interested.

Piper and his podcasts

As I’ve ran the last few days I’ve been listening to John Piper (a Christian pastor out of Minneapolis, Minnesota) speak and through him the Holy Spirit has imparted on me some powerful stuff. If you’ve never heard of John Piper and his ministry Desiring God Ministries (http://www.desiringgod.org/), I encourage you to check it out soon. He is not your light-hearted, make you feel good type of speaker, but more of a “smack you in the face” type of speaker. He brings the Truth and teaches the Bible. I often have to listen to his stuff more than once because it’s a little too heavy for me to get everything from it the first time.

The past two days I’ve listened to a podcast on human praise (“The Love of Human Praise as the Root of Unbelief” 09/20/09) and reaching out to the nations in missional living (“Other Sheep I Have: The Power of God’s Grace Among Native Americans Then and Now” 09/11/09). I definitely recommend both of them. In Piper’s message on human praise he makes one of the most profound statements I’ve heard it a long time. Piper states, “the blinding power of human want is absolutely staggering.” He speaks to the fact that what we want has control over what we believe and want has the ability to overcome the truth that should determine the way we live our lives. There is no way I can do it justice… just check it out.
